School Bike Education Program

BikeWalkBG, in partnership with Warren County Parks & Rec, the Barren River District Health Department, and community volunteers, will be offering free Bicycle Education classes to local city and county 4th graders again this school year.  The program was launched in the spring semester of 2024.  With funding from the Paula Nye Memorial Bicyclist and Pedestrian Education Grant funding, BikeWalkBG and partners are able to provide and bring to schools all of the bicycles, helmets, and equipment needed to provide a 45 minute P.E. session.  The program stresses bicycle safety & handling and healthy lifestyles, along with the joy of biking.

If you are a parent interested in the program for your child’s school, please reach out to administration.  If you would like to volunteer with Bike Ed or any other programming that BikeWalkBG sponsors, please reach out to Carroll Duckworth, MPO Coordinator at 270-842-1953 or carroll.duckworth@bgky.org

Upcoming Community Bike Rides

If you enjoy riding a bike with friends, you should join BikeWalkBG for our free community group bike rides throughout the year.  Ride types range from slow pace on short, protected routes like Greenways, to longer night-time rides on city and county streets.  Annual events include a Halloween night ride in costume, Light Up BGKY after-dark ride to see holiday lights downtown, and St. Patrick’s Day.  Other events this year included a Community Farmers’ Market Ride, Pride Ride, Downtown Family Slow Roll, and Earth Day Ride.

Every ride offers a great opportunity to get outside, meet new people, enjoy some healthy movement, and explore more of our beautiful community.  Follow BikeWalkBG on social media or visit our webpage for the calendar of upcoming events and updates.

It’s time to start working on your costume for the Halloween ride on 10/28!

Staying Active as the Seasons Change

Summer has once again flown by, but there is more to look forward to this year!  Autumn is a beautiful time of year to be outdoors, and the local Greenways are a great way to take advantage of that.  The slower speed of walking, running, or rolling, gives you a better chance than driving to breathe in the beauty of fall foliage.

With the cooler temps and shorter days, our concentration on safety shifts when being active outdoors.  While you may not need to be concerned about over-heating, being visible to motorists in low light conditions and after dark is paramount.  Besides continuing to wear helmets while biking, both cyclists and pedestrians should wear light colors, reflective gear, and lights when daylight wanes and before dawn.  Our community suffered several fatalities over this last year involving cyclists and people on foot.  We all work together toward safety, so motorists need to stay mindful of more vulnerable users of the road as well.

To help you get out and enjoy your local Greenways, you can find the current Greenways map. This interactive map allows you to click on sections to get trail specifics such as distance, elevation, and trail material.

If you haven’t been to the trails at Creekwood at Jennings Creek, Thames Valley/Preston Miller Park, or Wheldon Peete Park, go check them out this fall!
